It is always a pleasure to see the happy expressions on faces as we walk into the rooms and lounges for the patients to see, touch and pet Wendy and Lady. They are therapy horses for many things but the delight is with nursing homes, assisted living and special needs classes. People are always asking us to stay longer or to be sure and come back so they can see the Mini’s.
It takes from 3 to 4 hours to get them ready to go to work. By the time we bath, dry, brush and comb them. After we load them and get to our destination, unload them clean their feet and put their tennis shoes on it is usually another hour. But it is a pure pleasure to bring some happiness to these precious people. Wendy and Lady get a lot of attention which they love.
For the past year we have prepared and taken them as a community service. We have never charged for these services but we are hoping that this year donations will be made so we can continue visiting and bringing a few minutes of pleasure to the places that want us to visit.
Who or what can inspire grown men to participate in an activity that they enjoy? A Mini Horse of course!!
These veterans look forward to each visit from the Mini horses. Some of these gentlemen refuse to join others in activities but when Wendy and Lady show up, as many as can, get to the area where they can visit, touch and talk to the horses and each other. Exploring their lives of times past on a farm or ranch or just riding a horse. These little horses bring out the best in these precious giving Veterans.
The occupational therapist told us he couldn’t believe how much all of the men enjoyed the Mini visits and how so many of the men participated with them. All of the staff that could, came by to visit with the horses and he also said it was really healthy for the staff members too.
We hope that in the near future to bring as many veterans as possible out to the big arena to observe our Equine program for challenged people. We know the healing power of horses and it will give them something to look forward to. Of coarse Wendy and Lady don’t participate in that part of our program… They are just too little. |
