On horseback the rider learns balanceMany children with physical conditions and developmental delays are prescribed physical or occupational therapy to strengthen their muscles and improve coordination. Very often these therapies are provided in a clinical setting such as a hospital or a doctor's office using machines and other equipment. Some of the equipment used in clinical therapy even resembles the size and shape of a horse.

Riding therapy uses a horse as a therapy tool. The natural motions of the horse move and stretch the muscles of the rider, producing increased muscle control and strength. Unlike tools within a clinical setting in which the child must create movement, the horse creates movement while the rider responds. This response increases strength and improves balance. Children with autism, Down Syndrome, mental retardation, MS, MD, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, ADD/ADHD, and other physical or developmental conditions spend much of their childhood in and out of hospitals and clinics. Many times they feel "different" from their peers. Therapeutic riding provides an avenue for these children to improve not only their physically abilities, but they also experience improved self esteem and social skills.
